Be sure to join local charity CambridgePPF this October for a variety of nature-based family events in the spectacular outdoors. As the days draw in we’ll be welcoming the changing season with its beautiful bursts of colour, and having fun at the same time. Find out all about fungi from an expert as you stroll around the Country Park, or take in the stunning autumnal colours and views on a guided walk at Coton Reserve. There are plenty of children’s activities for the half-term break too – it’s costumes at the ready for a fun twilight walk around Wandlebury Park and scary pumpkin sculptures. You can test your mettle seeking out spiders as they weave their wonderful webs. The weather might be getting cooler but there’s plenty to keep you warm this autumn with CambridgePPF!

Wonderful Wandlebury – History and Fun Day
Saturday 3 October: 12noon to 4.30pmwarriors iron age
Wander around Wandlebury and try your hand at the variety of activities on offer at this popular day of history and archaeology – fun and learning for the whole family. CambridgePPF will showcase the very best that Wandlebury Country Park has to offer. There will be traditional Iron Age crafts for children, including mosaics, chain mail and weapon making. Get a taste of iron age life with open fire dough cooking, shelter and iron age hut building. Cambridge Storytellers will be engaging audiences with tales and stories. Test your skills at archery, check out beekeeping with the Cambridge Beekeepers and take part in a mini dig. Naturally, it’s important to keep refreshed while you do this – there will be a selection of teas and cakes available.
NB: Entry is free to this popular event but there will be a small charge for selected activities. There will also be opportunities to buy some items.
Donations to help fund the upkeep of Wandlebury Park are always welcome.
The events will take place across the Paddock, Ring, Orchard, and Stable Rooms.

hinxton-mill

Hinxton Watermill Open Day
Sunday 4 October: 2.30pm to 5.30pm
Drop in and explore this impressive 17th century working watermill, built on a site dating back to the Doomsday Book. Hinxton Mill, owned by CambridgePPF and run by volunteer guides, is located in charming surroundings in the village of Hinxton on the River Cam. Much of the machinery inside remains in good working order.
NB: CambridgePPF members can visit for free. For non members entry costs £3 for adults, £1 for children. No need to book.

Fungal Foray at Wandlebury Country Park
Saturdfungiay 17 October: 11.30am to 1.00pm
This event provides a chance for adults to take a guided stroll around Wandlebury Park and hear from an expert all about the fascinating array of fungi that thrives at this time of year. Fungi identification is an essential skill that requires many years of experience, so book a place soon and make sure you take advantage of this opportunity to hear from those in the know.
NB: For adults only. £4 (£3 for members). Booking is essential for this event.

Late Autumn Walk and Views
Saturday 24 October: 10am start
Join the CambridgePPF team on a guided two and a half hour walk around Coton Countryside Reserve to take in the best sights and views of Cambridge as the foliage starts on its colourful transition to winter. Bring along your camera as there will certainly be great opportunities for shots – the reserve boasts some of the most scenic views over this part of Cambridgeshire, and you’ll pinch yourself if you miss them.
NB: Be sure to book. Meet at Martin car park, Grantchester Road, where there is free parking, at 10am prompt. This is a free event but if you take part a donation would be greatly appreciated – the charity is currently fundraising for a compost toilet to be installed on the site.

October Children’s Half-Term Activities at Wandlebury Country Park Fun in the woods
This October we have a range of interesting and exciting half-term break activities for children – including an unaccompanied session on Friday 30 October where the team will look after your children for the day.

Awesome Autumn
Tuesday 27 October: 10am to 12noon
Bring the children to Wandlebury for an exciting morning exploring the park and finding out how wildlife prepares for winter here. Afterwards, head to the Stable Rooms and get creative for an art session with the wonderful autumnal colours. Bring a drink and a snack and dress for being outside and all weathers! Why not stay for an autumnal picnic and explore the Country Park afterwards?
NB: For children ages 5+. Children must remain accompanied throughout this event.                      £6.50 per child (members £5), adults free. Places are limited and must be booked and paid for in advance. Meet at Wandlebury Stable Rooms.

Spiders!
Wednesday 28 October: 10am to 12noon
It’s spider season at Wandlebury! You’ll have to be quick to hunt out these eight-legged creatures who weave their beautiful silk homes all around the park – the team will be on hand to point you in the right direction and teach you important spider facts. Then use what you’ve learned to create spider-inspired arts and crafts. Bring a drink and a snack and dress for being outside. Why not stay for an autumn picnic and explore the Country Park afterwards?
NB: This activity is recommended for children aged 5+ and all children must remain accompanied by an adult throughout the event. £6.50 per child (members £5), adults free. Places must be booked and paid for in advance. Meet at Wandlebury Stable Rooms.

Warm Woods!
Friday 30 October: 10am to 4pm
Drop off the children with the team for an unaccompanied day of traditional woodland fun. You’ll build dens, make fires, cook bread and toast marshmallows, practice tracking and play problem-solving games – all the outdoor activities that children enjoy the most, and get to do the least. The team will arrange everything – just bring along a packed lunch and you can eat it with everyone else around a cosy camp fire. Dress for being outside and prepare for all weathers!
NB: For ages 8+. £30 per child (members £25).This is a very popular event so please book and pay in advance. Bring a packed lunch, drink, and a snack. Meet at the Wandlebury Stable Rooms.

Halloween Fun at Wandleburyhalloween 2
Saturday 31 October: 3.30pm to 6.30pm
Come along in fancy dress for this popular evening of Halloween howls! Carve your own scary pumpkin sculpture and see it lit by candlelight on a guided twilight walk around the park. Once your spine is chilled, head back to the Stable Rooms to warm up with hot drinks around a fire. Bring a torch if you wish.
NB: Early booking is recommended for this very popular event. £8 per pumpkin (£6 for members).
