The crisp mornings and beautiful early evening sunsets mean autumn is here again, but while the mercury is falling it’s actually the perfect time to raise yourself up and outdoors to enjoy the captivating colours of the English countryside. This October CambridgePPF will be hosting a variety of fun seasonal activities to suit all ages – and everyone is invited. Bring the whole family to the unique history and archaeology fun day where you’ll be spoilt for choice by a wealth of traditional and historical hands-on events, try your hand at bat-box making, or take a leafy walk around Wandlebury on a fungal foray for adults. If you’re looking for ideas for the half-term holidays, there’s plenty to keep kids busy and banish the boredom with an arsenal of exciting activities – orienteering, exploring, tracking, making fires and toasting marshmallows. And if you can keep up, don’t miss the spooky fun on an evening of Halloween howls – if you dare. . .

Wonderful Wandlebury – History Fun Day
Saturday 1 October: 12pm to 5pm

Wander around Wandlebury and try your hand at the variety of activities on offer at this popular history day that’s packed with fun and learning for the whole family. CambridgePPF will showcase the very best that Wandlebury Country Park has to offer. Have a go at traditional crafts for children including making rope and using natural stains with the Cambridge Young Archaeologists, simple weaving or basic basket making techniques, cooking over an open fire or making chainmail. There will also be chances to try your hand at archery, use a slingshot and make your own stick bow and arrow to take home. Perhaps you’ll prefer to meet some of our local archaeologists and find out about their areas of expertise, join a guided tour of our Iron Age hillfort, follow self-guided historic trails, listen to stories told by the Cambridge Storytellers or even check out beekeeping with the Cambridge Beekeepers. Just take your pick! Naturally, it’s important to keep refreshed while you do all this – there will be a bbq as well as teas and cakes available to enjoy after enjoying the fascinating exhibitions and displays.
NB: Entry is free to this popular event but there will be a small charge for selected activities. There will also be opportunities to buy some items.
Donations to help fund the upkeep of Wandlebury Park are always welcome.
The events will take place across the Paddock, Ring, Orchard, and Stable Rooms.

Hinxton Watermill Open Day Sunday 2 October: 2.30pm to 5.30pm
This is the last opportunity this season to drop in and explore this impressive 17th century working watermill, built on a site dating back to the Doomsday Book. Hinxton Mill, owned by CambridgePPF and run by volunteer guides, is located in charming surroundings in the village of Hinxton on the River Cam. Much of the machinery inside remains in good working order. Children can take part in the Where’s Ratty contest!
NB: CambridgePPF members can visit for free. For non members entry costs £3 for adults, £1 for children. No need to book.

Bat Box Making Sunday 9 October: 10am to 12pm or 1pm to 3pm
Drop in for either one of two sessions at Wandlebury Country Park, where we’ll be joining the Cambridgeshire Bat Group in creating cosy roosts for these fascinating nocturnal mammals. The boxes will be put up around the park and monitored –staff will be present to supervise the box building and pass on interesting bat facts.
NB: Drop-in event, no need to book. This is a free event, donations welcome towards the upkeep of the park. All equipment supplied. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fungal Foray at Wandlebury Country Park Saturday 15 October: 11am to 1pm

A chance for adults to take a guided stroll around Wandlebury Park and hear from an expert all about the fascinating array of fungi that thrives at this time of year. Fungi identification is an essential skill that requires many years of experience, so book a place soon and make sure you take advantage of this opportunity to hear from those in the know.
NB: For adults only. £4 (£3 for members). Booking is essential for this event.
October Children’s Half-Term Activities at Wandlebury Country Park

This October we have a range of interesting and exciting half-term break activities for children – including an unaccompanied session on Friday 28 October where the team will look after your children for the day.

Awesome Autumn – Half-Term Activity for Accompanied Children Tuesday 25 October: 10am to 12pm
Bring the children to Wandlebury for an exciting morning exploring the park, finding out how wildlife prepares for winter and collecting beautiful leaves and seeds. Afterwards, head to the Stable Rooms and get creative for an art session with the wonderful autumnal colours. Bring a drink and a snack and dress for being outside and all weathers! Why not stay for an autumnal picnic and explore the Country Park afterwards?
NB: For children ages 3-7. Children must remain accompanied throughout this event. £8 per child (members £6), adults free. Places are limited and must be booked and paid for in advance. Meet at Wandlebury Stable Rooms.

Orienteering & Marshmallows! – Half-Term Activity for Accompanied Children Wednesday 26 October: 10am to 12pm

Have a blast navigating your way around specified routes using a map and compass. An energetic and fun way to learn teamwork, plus the chance to stay on afterwards and toast some well-earned marshmallows over a fire! Bring a drink and a snack and dress for being outside. Why not stay for an autumn picnic and explore the Country Park afterwards?
NB: Be prepared for a later finish if toasting marshmallows! This activity is recommended for children aged 6+ and all children must remain accompanied by an adult throughout the event. No previous experience necessary, instruction will be given. Maps and compasses provided. £8 for first child (members £6), subsequent children £6, adults free. Places must be booked and paid for in advance. Meet at Wandlebury Stable Rooms.

Autumnal Fun – Half-Term Activity for Unaccompanied Children Friday 28 October: 10am to 4pm
Drop children off with the team for an unaccompanied day of woodland fun. You’ll make fires, cook bread and toast marshmallows, make life-size pumpkin people and set and follow tracks, among other things – all outdoor activities that children enjoy most, and get to do least. The team will arrange everything – just bring along a packed lunch and you can eat it with everyone else around a cosy camp fire. Dress for being outside and prepare for all weathers!
NB: For ages 8-12. £40 per child (members £35). This is a very popular event so please book and pay in advance. Bring a large packed lunch, a drink, a snack and warm, outdoor clothing. Meet at the Wandlebury Stable Rooms.

Halloween Fun at Wandlebury<strong>Saturday 29 October: 3.30pm to 6.30pm

Come along in fancy dress for this popular evening of Halloween howls! Carve your own scary pumpkin sculpture and see it lit by candlelight. Join a guided twilight walk around the park. Once your spine is chilled, head back to the Stable Rooms to warm up with hot drinks around a fire. Bring a torch and marshmallows if you wish.
NB: Early booking is recommended for this very popular event. £10 per pumpkin (£8 for members). Children must be accompanied.
