Cambridge Biomedical Campus

Addenbrooke's Hospital (28.33 hectares of land to the west & south-west of Addenbrooke's Campus, Robinson Way).

 Proposed development content:

  • 215,000 sq. metres of new biomedical research and clinical space;
  • conference and hotel facilities and possibly, a relocated Papworth Hospital.
  • Some staff housing.

Current Status

Outline planning permission was granted in October 2009 for up to 215,000 sqm of floorspace for research and treatment facilities and associated support activities, landscaping and parking . The development is to include: 60,000 sqm of clinical research and treatment facilities; 130,000 of biomedical and biotech research and development; and 25,000 sqm of either clinical research and treatment or a higher education/medical research centre. To minimise the impact on local residents, a legal agreement secured contributions from the developers towards:
    • the construction of the Addenbrooke's Access Road and the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway
    • a vehicle licence plate recognition system to stop through-traffic
    • on-site parking provision
    • travel plans and off-site improvements to highways, footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways
    A Reserved matters application for a 1,228 space multi-storey car park off Robinson Way has been submitted to replace existing surface car parking and to allow for what is called the Forum development comprising a hotel, Learning Centre, and Conference Centre.
    Recent and current major construction projects include:
  • Medical Research Council’s 25,000 square metre (270,000 square foot) Laboratory of Molecular Biology which is due for completion in 2011.
  • The Rosie Hospital is being extended and is expected to be completed by July 2012.
  • The Addenbrookes Access Road is complete and the Guided Busway connects to the new development via a separate bridge.
  • The public art strategy for Cambridge Biomedical Campus was approved by the Planning Committee in March 2011.
