Northstowe

The site of a redundant airfield and barracks between Oakington and Longstanton - approx. 5 miles north-west of Cambridge.

The concept is a new eco-town, linked to Cambridge by the Guided bus and with some 10,000 dwellings, together with employment and all the facilities of a self-contained town. The site area is 427 hectares and the projected population and housing density is c 24,000 at an average density of 46 dwelling /hectare.

A planning application for the new town was submitted in 2007 but was not determined because of funding uncertainties, including a commitment by Government to improvements to the A14. However, given Northstowe's strategic role in the economic growth of the sub-region, both the local authorities and the developers are keen to see housing and investment brought forward as soon as possible.

Proposals for the new town are shortly to be re-launched. The Joint Promoters (Gallagher and the Homes and Communities Agency) are reviewing the Masterplan for the whole of Northstowe and plans for the first phase of approximately 1500 homes are being prepared. Consultation events on the proposed first phase and revised Masterplan were held in October,2011. A planning application for a first phase are expected to be lodged in early 2012.
