Volunteer Opportunity:  Heritage Watch Group

About the opportunity

Our Heritage Watch Group works to protect, celebrate and improve the important built heritage of the Cambridge area by:

  • Reviewing planning applications and development proposals and helping the charity to respond to them (this includes objecting to an application or suggesting ways that a development could be changed in order to protect or enhance heritage).
  • Reviewing Conservation Areas and working with council officers to ensure that information about heritage is up-to-date.
  • Nominating buildings to be listed (Local Heritage Lists).
  • Helping the charity to influence planning policies that relate to heritage (eg Local Plan policies).
  • Identifying projects or work that the Heritage Watch Group could do. For example, this could be organizing an event or campaigning for an improvement to a heritage feature.
  • Provide heritage advice on the charity’s own heritage assets (eg Leper Chapel, Hinxton Waternill, Bourn Windmill and Wandlebury).

The Heritage Watch Group is comprised of 6-10 people and is supported by the charity’s Principal Planning Officer. The Group meets quarterly and works via email in-between meetings.

The charity has good working relations with the City, South Cambs District and County councils.
