We’re looking for an enthusiastic part-time Warden Assistant to support our Estates Team during busy periods.

Cambridge Past, Present & Future is a local environmental charity that owns and cares for beautiful countryside sites and historic buildings in and around Cambridge, serving 120,000 visitors a year.

The Role

This is a varied and hands-on role that involves dealing face-face with the public and helping us to care for countryside and heritage. You will be part of a small team of full- time and part-time Wardens who have responsibility for supporting the visitor, wildlife and heritage management of Wandlebury Country Park, which is located on the southern edge of Cambridge.

We are looking for someone who can work two weekends per month (or two people who can work one weekend per month).

Our Warden Team operates 8am to dusk 365 days per year. To achieve this, they work to a shift rota which changes through the year with day-length. During winter months the hours are 8am-4pm but during summer the shifts are split so that one person works 8am-4pm and the other person starts and finishes later. This means that during the longer summer days you will often need to work alone for large parts of your shift.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about the outdoors, be reliable, hard-working and confident at communicating with the public. They will be comfortable working alone and outdoors on a public site and be flexible to work at different times according to the season.

The job presents the opportunity to work on some of Cambridge’s most beautiful and important countryside and heritage sites.

Additional Information

You may occasionally be asked to help cover during other busy periods or for holidays. You would be contacted about available shifts and asked if you would like to work – there is no requirement for you to accept these shifts if offered them.

Job Description

Job Title: Warden Assistant

Contract: Permanent, part-time 30 hours per month.

Location: Based at Wandlebury Country Park but you may occasionally be asked to work at other CambridgePPF properties. This role is primarily outdoors.

Salary: £10.20 per hour

Reporting to: Senior Warden

Job Summary:

Part of a small team of full-time and part-time wardens who have responsibility for supporting the visitor, wildlife and heritage management of Wandlebury Country Park and other sites owned by the charity. Working under the direction of the Senior Warden and dealing face-face with the public and helping to care for countryside and heritage property. This is a hands-on role that involves working outdoors, often alone.

Main Duties:

  • Patrol Wandlebury Country Park and ensure it is safe and clean for all visitors, to enforce park rules and check on any livestock.
  • Provide a helpful and informative service to visitors, residents and contractors, including supporting the operation of visitor car parking and pop-up café.
  • Support public and private events and activities, private hire, weddings, instructed activities, etc.
  • Carry out simple maintenance activities such as grass cutting.
  • Open/close the park.
  • Support the wardens with their tasks.

Other Tasks

  • Help to promote CambridgePPF and its work.
  • Participate in any relevant training/development and staff team activities.
  • Undertake any other related duties which from time to time may be required by the charity.

 Health & Safety

  • Be aware of and comply with CambridgePPF policies and procedures on health and safety at work: by adopting safe working practices, reporting any accidents and/or unsafe or hazardous conditions to management and to do everything reasonable to prevent personal injury to yourself, fellow workers and members of the public
  • Use of machinery is restricted to personnel with the relevant certificate, where this is a legal requirement or until the member of staff has received instruction in their safe use

 A risk assessment has been carried out for the role with hazards including:

  • Lone working
  • Manual handling
  • Use of 4x4 or off-road vehicles
  • Use of mechanical equipment e.g. mower
  • Working in or near water
  • Working all year round in all weather conditions

Person Specification

  1. Good customer care and people skills and the ability to work calmly and confidently with a wide range of people.
  2. Able to work outdoors in all seasons and carry out light physical work.
  3. Full driving licence.
  4. Reliable and hard working.

 Terms and Conditions of Employment

  • Hours: Typically 30 hours per month.
  • Main place of work: Wandlebury Country Park, Gog Magog Hills, Cambridge CB22 3AE but required to attend other CPPF properties around
  • Notice: 3 weeks
  • Probation: This is a period equivalent to 100 hours
  • Salary: £10.20 per hour
  • Holiday: 5 hours of holiday for every 60 hours worked.
  • Pension: CambridgePPF operates an auto-enrolment Pension Scheme with Aviva for qualifying
  • Disclosure & Barring: The post-holder may be required to receive an acceptable Enhanced Disclosure & Barring check.
