This year, Civic Voice, the national charity for the civic movement are running an award scheme in celebration of the 50^th anniversary of the first English Conservation Area. CambridgePPF have nominated the Central Conservation Area in Cambridge as England’s Favourite Conservation Area Award in this scheme.  

We are nominating this unique mixture of ancient and new, of built and natural environment, because it is the first conservation area in the City and CambridgePPF was directly involved in its creation back in 1969, as a result of the Civic Amenities Act 1967. CambridgePPF will also be celebrating the conservation area’s 50th anniversary in joint partnership with the City and County Council in February 2019.

CambridgePPF (along with numerous volunteers) worked with the City’s conservation team on the recent updating of the central conservation area appraisal, as well as recommending buildings to be added to the local list register.

The Cambridge Central Conservation Area is one of contrasts. Striking new architecture is intermingled with many beautiful ancient buildings. The town buildings are densely located within narrow streets, but there are also wider areas of green open space, on some of which, there are placid grazing cattle, which bring an air of rural countryside to the busy city centre.

There are many reasons why CambridgePPF believe this Conservation Area should win the award, but it is now up to the judging panel, who will publish their citations on the 28^th September.
